Jambmaths question:
A basket contains 9 apples, 8 bananas and 7 oranges. A fruit is picked from the basket, find the probability that it is neither an apple nor an orange
Option A:
$\tfrac{2}{3}$
Option B:
$\tfrac{3}{8}$
Option C:
$\tfrac{1}{3}$
Option D:
$\tfrac{7}{24}$
Jamb Maths Solution:
$\begin{align} & \text{Probability of selecting apple }\Pr (A)=\frac{9}{24}=\frac{3}{8} \\ & \text{Probability of selecting orange }\Pr (O)=\frac{7}{24} \\ & \text{Probability of selecting apple or orange =}\frac{3}{8}+\frac{7}{24}=\frac{2}{3} \\ & \text{Probability of selecting neither apple nor orange}=\Pr (O\cup A)' \\ & \Pr (O\cup A)'=1-\frac{2}{3}=\frac{1}{3} \\\end{align}$
