Jambmaths question:
If 5, 8, 6and 2 occur with frequencies 3, 2, 4 and 1, respectively, find the product of the modal and median number
Option A:
48
Option B:
40
Option C:
36
Option D:
30
Jamb Maths Solution:
We have to rearrange the numbers in increasing order of magnitude
|
x |
2 |
5 |
6 |
8 |
|
f |
1 |
3 |
4 |
2 |
Total frequency is 1 + 3 + 4 + 2 = 10
The median is $\frac{n+1}{2}th=\frac{10+1}{2}=5.5$th term
From the frequency table above, it is 6 that fall in this class. The median is 6
The mode is number which has the highest frequency, which is also 6.
Therefore the product of modal and median number is 6 × 6 = 36
